Christmas in Alessandria 2025:
the city lights up with Spacecannon

Alessandria, Italy

For Christmas in Alessandria 2025, Spacecannon created an urban Christmas lighting project spread across various locations in the city centre.

The project involved squares, churches, historic façades and gardens, creating a varied and dynamic illuminated route. Each location was treated with a specific solution: precision light mapping, festive projections, snow effects, coloured backdrops and lighting scenes controlled via DMX protocol.
The result is a project that combines lighting design, architectural lighting and temporary light installations, with a clear objective: to give the centre of Alessandria a recognisable, varied and consistent visual identity for Christmas.

A project spread across the city centre

The lighting project for Alessandria was particularly complex because it did not focus on a single building or square. Spacecannon worked across multiple sites, each with different architectural features, projection distances and visual objectives.

This decision helped to avoid a monotonous, repetitive effect. Each area of the centre was given its own unique lighting scheme, creating a sense of movement and variety along the Christmas trail.

The lighting was not designed merely as decoration, but as a system of signs: a sequence of images, colours and architectural features designed to guide residents and visitors through different parts of the city.

Piazzetta della Lega Lombarda: mapping on building facades and the obelisk

In the central square, Piazzetta della Lega Lombarda, Spacecannon used EYE 200 projectors to create a high-precision projection mapping display.

The project has highlighted two façades and the central obelisk, showcasing the architectural features without obscuring them. The lighting has been carefully calibrated to follow the contours of surfaces and volumes, restoring a sense of depth to the urban scene.

In this case, the architectural lighting focused on enhancing the clarity of the space: not just coloured light, but a carefully orchestrated design that highlights the details of the existing environment.

The Church of Saint Lucy in white and gold

The church of Santa Lucia was also illuminated using EYE 200 projectors.

The mapping has highlighted the architectural details of the façade, rendering them in shades of white and gold. This choice is in keeping not only with the Christmas season, but also with the character of the building: warm, clear and understated.

The lighting highlighted the decorative features without turning the façade into a featureless screen. The lighting design thus struck a balance between creating a festive atmosphere and respecting the architecture.

Bright greetings on a red background

For Piazza Santo Stefano and other churches in the city centre, Spacecannon opted for a different approach: a red Christmas-themed backdrop onto which festive messages were projected.

Black Devil Extreme and Horion were used for this project to create an immediate and recognisable visual signal.

The red served as a striking backdrop, whilst the lettering introduced a direct element of communication. A design that is simple to read but effective in an urban setting: warm, festive and easily legible even from a distance.

Piazza Marconi: a dynamic garden in DMX

In Piazza Marconi, Spacecannon has installed dynamic, colour-changing lighting in the garden at the centre of the square.

The installation was created using eCOLOR40 spotlights mounted on an American-style truss and controlled via DMX. This made it possible to control colour changes and lighting movements, creating a more vibrant and immersive atmosphere.

The garden was not treated merely as a backdrop, but as an integral part of the design. The lighting gave rhythm to the space, adding to the variety of the overall design.

From mapping to dismantling

Spacecannon managed the entire project independently, from developing the lighting plans to fine-tuning the system, right through to dismantling and collecting the projectors.

This comprehensive oversight of the operational stages has ensured consistency between the concept, the technical execution and the final result. In a project spanning multiple urban areas, this continuity is essential: whilst each site requires different solutions, the overall experience must remain recognisable as part of a single Christmas narrative.
