Town Hall and Tower
Settimo Torinese, Italy
Illuminating the identity of a city.
The lighting project for the Town Hall and Tower of Settimo Torinese
When light becomes a civic language.
In Settimo Torinese, the architectural lighting of two city symbols—the Town Hall and the Aqueduct Tower—is not just a matter of aesthetics, but an act of dialogue with the community.
A necessity that becomes an opportunity
It all started with a concrete emergency: the old lighting system in the town hall was faulty, with only 7-8 of the 24 lamps working. This situation obscured rather than illuminated the institutional identity of the municipality.
But the new administration, young and innovation-oriented, chose a different path: instead of simply replacing the existing LEDs, it wanted to transform the façade into a means of expression. Color as a tool to communicate, celebrate, and engage.
Lighting that can change its appearance, but above all, speak.
Light as a public language
With the help of Sabil, the company responsible for local public lighting, Spacecannon was brought in as a technology partner. The first phase involved the facade of the Town Hall (2021), followed by the tower (2022).
Today, the entire system is managed locally by municipal staff using ESA2 and ESA Pro software, which allow for autonomous scene programming. Light thus becomes a language, available every day, ready to respond to events, social campaigns, and institutional anniversaries.
"We wanted light that spoke to the city. Now we have it."

A shared and participatory lighting calendar
The lighting follows a coded calendar: blue for Autism Awareness Day, yellow and black for human rights, and the Italian tricolor for sporting achievements. But there are also customizations on request from local associations, such as the Red Cross or sports organizations.
A flexible system that allows for dynamic transitions, rainbow effects, and rapid alternations, adapting to needs without invasive interventions.
Behind the scenes: technology, constraints, and solutions
Everything was done without any construction work. Existing passages were reused on the facade, and new projectors were added at the base of the tower. An efficient design choice, but not without challenges.
Lightning damaged a control unit, leading to a lengthy replacement. The two control systems (ESA2 and ESA Pro) do not communicate with each other, and the addition of new scenes requires complete reloading.
The daytime aesthetic impact was also taken into account: the visible lighting fixtures were masked after years of use, with colored finishes matching the façade.
A community that recognizes itself in the light
The most powerful effect? The response from citizens. Images of the illuminated tower and City Hall went viral on social media, fueling a renewed sense of belonging.
It's not just a technical issue. It's a question of identity.
Non è solo una questione tecnica. È una questione identitaria.
Looking ahead: projections and possible futures
Recently, there has been talk of the possibility of integrating image projection, but the costs and technical complexity make the idea difficult to implement.
For now, the administration's priority remains the maintenance of public lighting and the use of architectural lighting as an added value. Even at Christmas, the Christmas projections are integrated with the existing lighting displays, creating a continuous dialogue between tradition and innovation.
"Every color lit up on that wall has something to say. Even when we don't speak, light speaks for us."
